Is This Retreat Really For Me? An Invitation to Come as You Are.
We’ve recently reflected on Jesus' invitation to come away and rest, and we've imagined what it might feel like to spend a weekend immersed in prayer, gentle movement, nature, and community. Yet even as our hearts begin to long for that kind of space, another voice often begins to whisper questions and hesitations.
Would I fit in?
I've never been to a retreat before.
What if I don't know anyone?
I'm not very flexible.
What if everyone else has it all together?
What Does a Weekend at Wild Sanctuary Feel Like?
We recently reflected on Jesus' invitation to "come away...and get some rest." It is a beautiful invitation, but perhaps it also raises a practical question: What does it actually feel like to step away?
For many of us, arriving at retreat isn't as simple as pulling into a parking lot or unpacking a weekend bag. We arrive carrying full calendars, unfinished to-do lists, conversations that linger in our minds, and responsibilities waiting for us at home. We bring the joys and sorrows of everyday life, and often we arrive wondering if we'll really be able to settle into the rhythms laid out for us without being pulled back into the world we’ve intentionally set aside for the weekend.
Why Jesus Invites Us to Come Away
There are seasons when life asks so much of us that we hardly notice how weary we've become. We move from one responsibility to the next, caring for those entrusted to us, tending our work, our homes, our ministries, and our relationships. Even our quiet moments can become filled with notifications, errands, and the subtle pressure to keep moving. Before long, we find ourselves longing for something we can't quite name—a little more space to breathe, a little more silence, a little more time to remember who we are in the presence of God.
Perhaps you've felt that longing, too. It often arrives as a quiet ache beneath the surface of our days. We may not have the words for it, but our souls recognize the invitation to slow down long before our minds are willing to listen.
Lovingkindness Guided Meditation for our Country
At Wild Sanctuary Retreats, we believe in a loving, personal and communal God; that every person is made in the image of God, deeply beloved; and that in Christ we are invited to live lives marked by peace, presence, restoration and love.
We are grateful to reside in a country that shares these ideals. A nation founded on the conviction that every person possesses inherent worth and is worthy of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. So, we pause on this Fourth of July weekend with gratitude for the freedoms we enjoy, while remembering that our deepest freedom is found in Christ. (Christ has set us free! This means we are really free. - Galations 5:1)
The freedom Christ offers is not simply freedom from oppression, but freedom for love. Freedom to forgive. Freedom to serve. Freedom to seek justice. Freedom to become peacemakers. Freedom to welcome the stranger and care for our neighbor. All as Jesus taught us.
We invite you to pause with us from the joyful noise of celebration of our Independence and remember that it is our ‘interdependence’ that strengthens our democracy. This guided meditation pulls from a Metta (lovingkindness) practice that focuses on compassion and universal goodwill, directing positive thoughts, prayers and blessings towards ourselves, then outward to our fellow citizens and neighbors – those we cherish & those we find difficult, and ultimately to all who inhabit this land. Jesus is the ultimate example of lovingkindness. May we follow his example….
Welcome, Summer
Throughout history, people have marked the Summer Solstice as a sacred day, taking time to celebrate the arrival of summer. From farmers who celebrated the solstice as the midpoint of the growing season, leading to prayer for continued growth and abundant crops, to people celebrating the warmth, energy, and vibrancy of the sun at peak, representing a triumph of light over darkness, the summer solstice has plenty of roots across history and location of being an occasion worthy of marking.
For us at Wild Sanctuary Retreat, we were able to host our very first Summer Solstice Mini Retreat just a couple days before the summer solstice and it was a beautiful time of bright energy, perfect weather, joyful conversation, and meaningful moments.
